A first interview can feel overwhelming - new people, new questions and the pressure of making a good impression. The good news is that most interviewers are not looking for perfect answers. They are looking for someone who is prepared, honest and willing to learn.
1. Research the company
Spend 20 minutes learning what the company does, who its customers are and what the role involves. Being able to say one or two specific things about the company shows genuine interest.
2. Know your own resume
Anything written on your resume is fair game. Be ready to explain every course, project and skill you have listed - in simple words and with a real example.
3. Prepare answers to common questions
- Tell me about yourself
- Why do you want this job?
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- Where do you see yourself in three years?
4. Practise out loud
Answers that sound good in your head often come out differently when spoken. Practise with a friend or family member, or book a mock interview with our placement team.
5. Dress neatly and arrive early
Clean, simple formal clothes are enough. Reach 15 minutes early so you are calm, not rushing. For online interviews, test your internet, camera and microphone beforehand.
6. Ask one good question
At the end, interviewers usually ask if you have questions. Asking about training, the team or what success looks like in the role shows that you are thinking ahead.
7. Follow up politely
A short thank-you message the same day keeps you in the interviewer's mind and shows professionalism.
Preparation does not guarantee the job, but it guarantees you will give your best.
